The Code of Practice for Investigators of Fires and Explosions for the Justice Systems in the UK is jointly published and endorsed by the National Fire Chiefs Council, the Institution of Fire Engineers, and the UK Association of Fire Investigators. The third edition of the Code of Practice has been developed by a tri-party drafting committee, which now seeks a national consultation prior to release.

The Code of Practice has been developed to support and provide guidance to organisations and individuals engaged in the investigation of fires and explosions within the framework of the justice systems of the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland).

Following your review of the draft version of the third edition you are invited to add your comments in relation to each section of the document. If you do not have any comments to add to a specific section, please select 'NO' and the consultation document will progress to the next section.

An opportunity to add an overall comment will be provided at the end of the consultation document. You are encouraged to add your personal details to enable the chair of the review committee to clarify any points you may have provided. No personal information will be shared with any individual or organisation.

The consultation survey will close at midnight on the 28th February 2026.  The survey can be found here:
