The UK Association of Fire Investigators (formally known as the IAAI-UK) was formed on the 31 January 2003 at an inaugural meeting at City Hall, London. It is the 67th Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators. In 2020, the UK-AFI was awarded the “Outstanding Chapter Award” by the IAAI, a great accolade to be selected from 81 Chapters across the world.

The UK-AFI is the Professional Body for fire investigators within the UK and there are currently over 400 members, with representation from the fire service, insurance industry, law enforcement, forensic scientists, private fire investigators, fire investigation training providers, and forensic science academic establishments. Its aim is to develop and maintain good practice in the investigation of fire and to develop and share technical knowledge in fire and arson investigation techniques and procedures.

The UK-AFI normally holds two training conferences each year, in January (two day) and July (one day).  The unique circumstances of 2020 meant that these conferences were replaced by around seven well attended Webinars, available free to all members.

In addition to training conferences, the Association produces an informative and educational journal, twice per year, again free to all members.

In 2019, the UK-AFI journal won the “Best Chapter Publication” at the IAAI ITC.

The Association provides two levels of enhanced membership with associated Post Nominals, to suitably experienced and qualified members. (Member MFireInv & Fellow FFireInv) A small registration fee applies.
