Alex served over 30 years with the West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and attained the role of Watch Commander within their dedicated Fire Investigation team and Ignitable Liquid Detection Dog (ILDD) Handler.
Throughout his career he served operationally, delivered and assessed trauma care and road traffic collision to operational personnel. Additionally, Supported the fire brigade union as the health, safety and welfare lead, creating and evaluating risk assessments and other work practices.
He has also committed to supporting the maintenance of high standards across the rescue sector as a medical assessor for the United Kingdom rescue organisation, which he has carried out from 2021. Furthermore, serving as a pension’s representative on the WMFS pension board.
Always having a passion for fire investigation, he created and designed the ‘Level 2 Award in Introduction to Fire Investigation’ in 2015. In his final 5 years serving as a dedicated Tier 2 Fire Investigator (FI) and ILDD dog handler, with his cocker spaniel partner, ‘Giddy’, licensed by South Yorkshire Police.
During his time in as an FI he attended both crown and coroners court, producing reports for both. He investigated over 200 fires including commercial properties and fatalities and attended 99 ILDD deployments to 11 fire services. Delivering training to operational officers, police forensic officers and other agencies. Supporting research projects for universities.
He has attained the L7 Certificate in Advanced Professional Award in Expert Witness Evidence, L5 Award in Fire Investigation Theory & Practice, L4 Certificate in Fire Investigation, L4 Award in Leadership & Management, L4 Certificate in Teaching, L4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care, Nebosh General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, L3 Award in Risk Assessment, L3 Award in Assessing Methods and National College of Policing Police Dog Handler Licence.
Now exploring new adventures as an associate tutor at the Fire Service College, delivering vocational training to commercial businesses and opportunities as an ILDD investigation team.
