Mike started his career in the fire industry in 1997 when he joined Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue service as a firefighter. He served in the fire service for nearly 18 years fulfilling various roles from operational firefighter to Incident Commander.

From 2007 to 2014 Mike performed the role of Fire Investigation officer within the Fire Service. He gained experince managing and undertaking complex fire scene investigations involving the loss of life, property and personal injury. Many of these investigations involved partnership working with the Procurator Fiscals, Local Authorites, Police, private forensic service providers, and Insurers.

Since October 2014 Mike have been undertaking forensic fire investigations within the private sector, currently with Jensen Hughes (formerly IFIC Forensics). This has afforded him the opportunity to expand his knowledge and experience by working on a variety of marine, industrial, commercial and residential investigations.

He has been certified as an IAAI Fire Investigation Technician since August 2011 and IAAI Certified Fire Investigator since November 2013. In 2020 he received his Members grade membership with the Institute of Fire Engineers. In 2013 he completed a MSc in Fire Scene Investigation from the University of Central Lancashire. He has achieved his Level 7 Advanced Professional Award in Expert Witness Evidnece in 2016. In March 2021 he  completed a Diploma in Marine Accident Investigation through the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy.
