Fujitsu Siemens Computers announces a recall on batteries in specific AMILO Notebook products. The company took the decision to implement this proactive exchange program after receiving a very limited number of customer reports of a defect in the batteries. The company recommends that on specific models, customers should stop using the batteries immediately, and operate their Notebook with the AC power adapter only.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers will provide customers a replacement battery free of charge. A website has already been implemented to assist customers with the exchange program.
Please see www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/batteryexchange.

Battery model ending number: all impacted models end with G1L1

No other AMILO, AMILO Pro or LIFEBOOK batteries are involved in this exchange program.

Computer Manufacturer: Fujitsu Siemens Computers

Risk: In some batteries there might be a defect which can cause the battery cells to overheat, with a risk of fire.

Incidents: To date, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has received four reports of batteries overheating out of a possible 250,000 units. There are no reports of injury at time of release.

Sold At: Distributors, resellers, catalogers and retail stores sold the computers with the batteries starting October 2004 through the current date. The batteries may have been sold separately as second battery source.

Remedy: The Company is advising customers to stop using the impacted batteries immediately and contact Fujitsu Siemens Computers to arrange for a replacement battery. The replacement battery is free of charge. After removing the battery from their AMILO or AMILO Pro, customers should plug in the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.

Web order procedure: To identify if a battery needs to be replaced, customers should remove the battery from the computer and to view the battery label. If this has a number ending with G1L1, the battery should be exchanged. If a battery does not have this specific number ending, it is not impacted and not part of the exchange program. No other notebook (AMILO, AMILO Pro or LIFEBOOK) batteries are involved in this exchange program.

How to identify the notebook model number: Please look at the bottom of the system to find a label that will indicate the Notebook model number. You will find the model number in the middle of the label.

Next Steps: If the model number corresponds to one of the impacted models, the battery should be removed to check the label and the battery pack ending number. To remove the battery:

Switch the notebook off and pull the power plug out of the mains socket. Close the LCD screen so that it locks into place. Disconnect all cables connected to the notebook. Turn your notebook over and place it on a sturdy, flat surface. Push the battery lock in the direction of the arrows and hold in into place. (The arrow is shown on the battery lock). Remove the battery from the battery compartment. Additional information can be found in the User Manual for your notebook computer in the section manual under "Notebook views" Numbers 30 and 31.

If the Battery Pack ending number has G1L1, the battery should be replaced. Battery Packs with any other ending numbers are not impacted.

We also request for safety and environmental reasons, that customers return the potentially defective batteries. This program is also free of charge and customers will receive information on the return program when they receive their replacement battery. .

Hotline Contact: Contact Fujitsu Siemens Computers at 08702 434390 between 9.00am and 8.00pm, Monday to Friday or 10.00am to 4.00pm, Saturday or log on to the web site at www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/batteryexchange to check your battery's serial number and apply for a replacement battery.
