Mike Flanagan

Mike Flanagan MSc FIFireE MCSFS, IAAI-CFI IAAI-ECT, IAAI-CI. Mike was in the Fire Service for nearly 35 years having joined the Greater Manchester Fire Service in 1977 as a Junior Fireman. He was promoted to the Mid Glamorgan Fire Service as a Station Officer in 1989. On reorganisation of the Welsh Fire Services in 1996, he became a member of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service which included a secondment as an instructor at the Fire Service College, Moreton in Marsh. On returning, he took up the post of Head of Fire Crime and Fire Investigation as a Group Manager, which was a position he held for 13 years. As the lead Fire Investigator in South Wales, Mike attended many high profile and serious incidents including murders, multiple million pound fire losses, and an incident resulting in the tragic loss of a Firefighter. He has presented evidence before all Courts and other formal enquiries, both as a formal and expert witness.

Mike has appeared on TV many times on news bulletins, documentaries for local and national TV, as well as the History Channel, and also as an advisor to television producers looking for realism in their programmes. He lectures to Forensic Science students at a local college and also at the University of Glamorgan. He was the first person in Wales to hold the CFI and CI qualifications, and also has a foundation degree in Fire Scene Investigation. 

He has served the UK-AFI as a Regional Representative for Wales and as a UK-AFI Board member with a responsibility for training, before becoming the 2nd Vice President in 2014.
